DENVER
(AP) A man suspected of shooting and killing a police detective and wounding his colleague last month was arrested in Mexico on Saturday, ending an extensive manhunt that also included investigations in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, Denver police said.

(ap) - This is not getting much National Attention, but it has very Serious National Implications. The reason the National Media is Choosing to Ignore this story, just as they Ignore the Fact in this story that he was Illegal, is because of White Liberal Guilt and an Obscene Sympathy towards Murderers, Specifically those who are not White, and are not Killing Abortionists or Pedophiles, or are not in our Military and involved in a Questionable Kill in Iraq...  No Sympathy for our Military whatsoever!  I am Honestly shocked that there is no reference to his Illegal Status, even in a Politically Correct manner, like, "Undocumented Immigrant".  This is really Telling about where the "Free Press" is on this very Important issue that faces this Country at a very Critical time in our History.  I have people in the DPD who knew this Officer, and our Thoughts and Prayers go out to the Family of the Victim, and to those Officers who have to move forward in that very Difficult line of Work.  This Illegal issue has to be dealt with, sooner rather than later. - tha malcontent)

Four other people suspected of helping Raul Garcia-Gomez, 19, were arrested in Denver and Los Angeles, Denver Police Chief Gerry Whitman said.

Gomez's father, Mercedes Castaneda Gomez; a sister, Ayde Gomez; and Santiago Nicholas Hernandez, possibly Gomez's uncle, were being held on immigration violations in Los Angeles, Whitman said. Federal authorities were investigating whether they could be charged with harboring a fugitive, he said.

In Denver, Jaime Arana was arrested for accessory after the fact to first-degree murder, authorities said.

Whitman said he expected more arrests in Los Angeles.

Detective Donald Young, 43, was shot multiple times from behind while providing security for a private celebration of a baptism early May 8, police said. Gomez had reported for his job as a dishwasher hours after the shooting but didn't report for another shift after that.

Detective John H. Bishop, 35, was wounded in the shooting but was wearing a bulletproof vest and survived.

The officers were off-duty but in uniform at the time, police said.

Gomez's car was found behind a Los Angeles home days later, and more than 200 officers began searching the area for him. Authorities also alerted authorities in Mexico, where Gomez has relatives, and along the border.

The authorities were tipped off to Gomez's whereabouts Saturday, and he was arrested without incident in Culiacan, in Sinaloa, Mexico, around 6 p.m. Denver time, Whitman said. He declined to give details.

''I talked to the arresting officers on the ground _ who were standing right next to Gomez _ and I personally thanked them on behalf of the family,'' he said.

Whitman said Young's widow and father were relieved to hear of the arrests.

''He is very emotional and relieved that the arrest has been made,'' Whitman said of Young's father.

''There's a sense of relief, but now we have to move onto the next phase and hold him accountable for what he did,'' he said.

Denver District Attorney Mitchell Morrissey said he was negotiating with Mexican authorities to get Gomez sent to Denver for a trial but wasn't certain he would agree to waive the possibility of the death penalty to get Gomez tried in Colorado.

''I haven't made that decision yet. That's certainly a complicated decision that has to be made after with speaking to the victim's widow and certainly to Detective Bishop, family members, those kind of things,'' he said.

Authorities were just a step behind Gomez a couple of times, Whitman said.

''It has taken law enforcement all over the country. It was a very coordinated act,'' Morrissey said. ''We got incredible help from the federal authorities.''

Police in Los Angeles and Mexico, the State Department and U.S. Marshals all assisted, Whitman said.

Gomez was to be taken to Mexico City on Sunday.

Denver detectives were continuing to investigate in Los Angeles, and detectives were also headed to Mexico City, Whitman said.

Mayor John Hickenlooper said the impact of the arrest is beyond what anyone could have anticipated.

''To be able to bring this individual to justice, I think is a powerful thing for the city,'' he said.
