GOP Frets About Bush Re-Election Chances

WASHINGTON (
AP) For the first time since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, rank-and-file Republicans say they are worried about President Bush's re-election chances based on the feeble economy, the rising death toll in Iraq and questions about his credibility.

(ap) - The Associated Press needs to create a sub-section to the Main Wire and call it "Commentary" and put abjectly biased DNC Talking Points, such as this piece of TRIPE masquerading as legitimate news that they are constantly affording their Party, in that section so that SHEEPle will know that this is a DemocRAT campaign advertisement donated by the AP, and not respectable journalism... If the AP had any shame!  Who determines what the collective "rank and file" in my Party are thinking or saying AP?  I would bet one of the two remaining ounces of the Collective Left's soul, that the vast majority of "rank and file" in my Party are not, finger in the wind, fence riding, Northeast (r)epublicans, as these, hand-picked by the AP, nay-saying traitors to the GOP are!  Yes, for giving the AP ammo against the Party, this VERY SMALL sample of what the AP is passing off as the Right, are Traitors to the Party.  Well, I can just imagine what Ron Fournier has in store for us during the rest of his DNC Talking Point, shall we find out? - tha malcontent)

"Of course it alarms me to see his poll figures below the safe margins," said Ruth Griffin, co-chair of Bush's 2000 campaign steering committee in New Hampshire. "If he isn't concerned, and we strong believers in the Bush administration aren't concerned, we must have blinders on."

("And we strong believers in the Bush administration...", is there anyone editing at the AP?  Or, could this just be a disparaging caricature of the average "red-neck Right-winger", and not the obvious typo that it appears to be on it's face? - tha malcontent)

The worries emerged as Griffin and nearly two dozen other GOP stalwarts were interviewed by The Associated Press in advance of the Republican National Committee's meeting this week in New York, site of the 2004 GOP presidential convention and the starting point of Bush's wartime surge in popularity.

("Nearly two dozen firm, resolute and stout GOP members", is what the AP is attempting to pass off as Honest journalism.  The Fact that this handful of cherry-picked, Northeastern (r)epublican's, are so quick to venture into the belly of the Beast and whine about the polls, is a clear indicator that they are NOT the "stalwarts" of my Party... Pretty transparent AP!  You guys aren't even attempting to appear objective any longer, are you? - tha malcontent)

Bush's poll ratings skyrocketed after the attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center as he led the nation in mourning and then to war with blunt talk and a confidence that soothed an anxious nation.

Polls show that about six of every 10 Americans still approve of the way he's doing his job, a solid rating that Republicans say will overcome Bush's current problems and carry him to re-election.

(So, the AP basically admits here, in a round about way, that the collective REPUBLICan is not worried, but that does not stop the AP from painting a much different picture with this negatively headlined Wire story that creates a much different perception than reality, but then again, I expect nothing less from the tool of the DNC! - tha malcontent)

But the president has seen a drop in other early warning indicators, including the number of people expressing confidence in his credibility and leadership along with his handling of the economy and postwar Iraq.

(Thanks DIRECTLY to the incessant focus on every little negative nugget that the "Free Press" can possibly find, as if it were the news of Century every time they find it, or some DNC hack wants to expand on it. - tha malcontent)

A recent CNN-Time poll found that 47 percent view Bush as a leader they can trust, down from 56 percent in March. A thin majority of voters said they harbor doubts about his leadership.

(This story is nothing more than a veiled negative poll story in a long line of negative poll stories that the AP loves to harp on whenever they can find a reason, no matter how thin and politically motivated they obviously are!  Negative poll news, begets negative poll news, and the AP knows this all too well! - tha malcontent)

Some Republicans say they fear the drop is the result of Democrats harping on 16 words in Bush's Jan. 28 State of the Union address in which he cited a British report suggesting that Iraq was seeking uranium from Africa for a nuclear weapons program.

(The DemocRATS are not the only entity that is "harping" on Bush (43)'s 16 words at the SOTU... The people bringing you this "news" have done a fine job of "harping", and feeding the harping themselves! - tha malcontent)

The claim has been challenged by U.S. intelligence officials. Top-level White House aides have said the words should not have been in the speech; Bush said the phrase had been cleared by CIA director George Tenet.

Several GOP backers said they were surprised that Bush didn't shoulder any blame himself, appealing to voters who consider him a straight-shooting leader and tend to support him even when they disagree with his policies.

(And now for a quote from nobody important in the GOP... But will the AP make light of the Fact that Clinton said that the 16 words are no big deal last night on CNN?... Of course they will not.  If President Ford had said the opposite of what Clinton said, the "Free Press" would have not shut-up about it for days on end, maybe even weeks! - tha malcontent)

"For the first time he's waffled a little bit on the Niger-uranium story," said former Rep. John Paul Hammerschmidt of Arkansas, a member of the 165-person RNC. "They didn't confront that totally. They let Tenet take the bullet."

"I'm not sure they've totally gotten their act together," Hammerschmidt said.

(This is truly Pathetic AP... If you had any shame at all. - tha malcontent)

Other Republicans said the polls reflected voter concerns with Bush's staff, not the president himself.

"I really think it's a concern about the people he has around him, and not really about him and his character," said Christine Olson, an oil and gas drilling contractor and RNC member from Pennsylvania.

There was unanimity among the Republicans that Bush's word is still golden, and they dutifully predicted he will eventually overcome challenges on the economy, postwar Iraq and his handling of intelligence.

(The President is giving the Left enough rope...  Keep calling him dumb, you idiots! - tha malcontent)

"The Democrats have hung their hope on one sentence," said former Connecticut GOP chair Chris DePino. "The nation would be better off hanging its hopes on George Bush."

Bush's main justification for war was the assertion that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, but none has been found.

(It was one of the "main" justifications AP, it was not until after the VERY short, 3 week victory of 150,000 or finest in the taking of a country of 26 million, that you had to find something to attack him over, so you chose the WMD's issue. - tha malcontent)

The administration also has not located terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden nor Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, though a U.S. raid Tuesday killed four Iraqis, including Saddam's sons.

(Yeah!, so there! - tha malcontent)

Several of the president's backers acknowledged that the crowded field of nine Democratic presidential candidates has been invigorated by the president's trio of troubles - intelligence, postwar Iraq and the economy.

(The AP has now named their negative attack spin against the Man that they campaigned against in 2000, it is "The President's Trio of Troubles"... What a sorry gaggle of Marxists these little punks at the AP are! - tha malcontent)

Recent polls show that just over half of Americans disapprove of Bush's handling of the economy.

"The economy is touch and go," said Dick Taylor, an RNC member from Maryland. "I've got to believe it recovers really fast. If not, obviously we'll be in some trouble."

(These quotes help to support Ron at the AP's predetermined conclusion for this piece if TRIPE he is attempting to pass off as "journalism"... Nice job Mr. Fournier! - tha malcontent)

Republicans said there will be trouble for Bush if postwar Iraq continues to claim the lives of American troops. Another U.S. solider was killed Tuesday, bringing the total killed in action to 153 - six more than during the 1991 Gulf War.

"This guerrilla warfare is disturbing," Hammerschmidt said.

(I bet publishing these meaningless quotes feels really, really good, huh Ron! - tha malcontent)

He ended with a word of advice for Bush.

"Talk very frankly and candidly to the American people," the Arkansan said. "That has been your strength."

(Fantastic job bastardizing the Trade once again AP, Bravo! - tha malcontent)
