(SFC) - Members of the nation's largest psychiatric association discovered San Francisco's mentally ill homeless problem up close this week, as they stepped out of their annual convention and were surprised -- some say shocked -- by the legions of people living on the street.

 

(ap) - If you have never read the San Fran Chronicle, then you may be susceptible to Liberal assertions that it is not a Liberal paper... Those assertions are partially correct, because it is actually Left of Liberal.  It is a patently Marxist publication, and this story, along with the whole San Francisco experience, as it were, is a testament to just that!  Part of me is laughing at these Shrinks because I find their shock to be entertaining, but another part of me is saddened and concerned that the Left still doesn't get it in regard to the willful filth among us.  San Francisco has all but opened it's doors to homeless people nationwide.  Most of these people are bums, and I have no sympathy for them.  Many are criminal, and some are insane.  It is the fault of ignorant Marxists such as Willy Brown, that the homeless problem is growing like a cancer in that region of the nation.  You are sure to hear all about cuts in funding that have caused this... Typical Liberal response to any problem, there is insufficient tax payer money going to it, and that is why it has problems.  Of course, honest, thinking people know that the Left will never stop asking for more money, and they are notorious for calling lesser increases in funding in any given budget, a cut.  This hits at the root of their dishonesty.  The tide in this country is turning though.  Thanks to the new media and the internet, the Left no longer has the monopoly on information, and the more the Left's old schoolers, Dan, Peter and Tom spew the Left's lies, and then it is countered as the TRIPE that it is, the more and more their Power is taken along with their credibility.  Anyway, I had to document this, because it is really telling as an example of just how lost in their own ignorant agenda that the Left is in the year 2003!  The real victims are those that the Left has generationally enslaved with their Socialism.  These people are products of that very Socialism. - tha malcontent)

 

The worst, however, came when an official of the American Psychiatric Association, a Baltimore doctor known for being an advocate for the indigent mentally ill, was assaulted by an apparently homeless man with a history of psychiatric problems. Knocked unconscious by the seemingly random attack near Union Square on Sunday morning, the doctor spent the week recovering at San Francisco General Hospital. Dr. Geetha Jayaram, an associate professor of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the scientific program committee chairwoman of the psychiatric association, is expected to be released soon.

Police arrested Aaron Matthew Hull, 32, who has no local address and has a history of being detained for psychiatric evaluations, according to law enforcement sources. He was being held in the county jail on two felony counts of assault and battery and is scheduled to appear in court today to determine if he is competent to face charges. 

 

The irony of the attack was not lost on the association's members and other convention goers, many of whom said that they'd been noting the large numbers of homeless people on the streets ever since they arrived Saturday.

 

(There is much irony in the Liberal agenda and it's outcomes.  I enjoy observing it on an almost daily basis, just like this story. - tha malcontent)

 

"It's kind of shocking," said James McNulty, head of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. "I've been walking around the hotels and up the hill to Fisherman's Wharf. It was very disheartening." Long before the attack happened, the APA had planned a news conference Wednesday to publicize past and future threatened cuts to what the group's leaders called the nation's "crumbling mental health system."

 

("Past and future THREATENED cuts"... I love the Left and their constant raping of the language. - tha malcontent)

 

More than 27 million people with mental health problems are facing "personal health care disasters," they said, because of Medicaid and state funding cuts to mental health programs. "Imagine what it would be like to have heart disease and be told, 'Sorry, there is a budget crisis, we can't afford your beta blockers,' " McNulty said at the news conference. "Can you imagine the outcry?" 

 

McNulty, who lives in Omaha, said that he had "never seen greater contrast between degradation and great wealth. If you think things are bad in San Francisco now, wait until the cuts happen. And I'm not just talking like Chicken Little." Jayaram had come to the convention, which drew about 19,000 participants, to speak, among other topics, about outreach to indigent mentally ill people in India. Her husband, Jay Kumar, said his wife is "doing better but not 100 percent right yet."

 

(McNulty said he had "never seen a greater contrast between degradation and great wealth".  This sounds like the accusation that the Left has made against Conservatives for decades... "The gap between the have's and have not's" only get's bigger under Conservatives.  San Francisco has two types of people, rich Liberals, and poor Liberals who are promised to be cared for by other people's money by said rich Liberals!  San Francisco is America's shinning example of the failure of Socialism. - tha malcontent)

 

'TALKING TO HIMSELF'

He said he had been walking with her Sunday morning when he saw a man "talking to himself and eating" as he paced on a sidewalk near Post and Grant streets. Police said witnesses told them the suspect was making loud comments and yelling at Jayaram and her companions. 

 

Kumar said the suspect passed them and was about 20 to 30 yards away when he suddenly approached Jayaram from behind and struck her. Kumar said he did not know if the assailant used his fist or a weapon. Someone at the scene called 911, and Hull was arrested a short time later. Kumar said he was concerned that so many people who appear to need mental health treatment are wandering around the streets in San Francisco -- although he said he did not know anything about Hull's background.

 

(I love confused "intellectual" Liberals, especially when they are clearly no where near the path to the answer, even after being literally smacked with it as these Shrinks were! - tha malcontent)

 

"I don't think proper treatment is being given to these people," said Kumar, who is not a psychiatrist. "As far as I'm concerned, it's a scary situation." Mental health advocates and psychiatrists cautioned against stereotyping the mentally ill, saying that although they are more likely to be homeless, most aren't violent. But advocates also warned that budget cuts may only exacerbate what violence does occur.

CUTS IN HOUSING, TREATMENT

"You have the federal governments cutting housing and the state cutting treatment, and you end up with all these mentally ill people on the street," said Paul Boden, head of the Coalition on Homelessness. "You have all these people wandering around with no housing or treatment." P.J. Johnston, a spokesman for Mayor Willie Brown, said the city is faced with a "vexing paradox" because it was inundated with people seeking mental health treatment "partly as a result of the fact that we do more than anyone else" to help people.

 

(Yep, budget cuts are causing this.  If we made the tax rate 100%, and provided for everyone, Life would suck for everyone in their tiny little flats, and these bastard "homeless" people would still be in the park harassing us.  We would just have less money to help get us away from them.  Liberals just do not get it! - tha malcontent)

 

"If you add to that the abandonment by the state and federal agencies that traditionally help people with mental health issues, you see that San Francisco is in a difficult position," he said. Some psychiatrists at the meeting said they were dismayed when they walked around their hotels and the Union Square area. 

 

Inside, they attended the hundreds of meetings on new drug therapies and scientific advancement in treatment. But outside, they couldn't help noticing the population they have dedicated their careers to helping. "It's ironic to see the number of homeless mentally ill on the streets here," said John Kane, a psychiatrist at Hillside Hospital in New York, moments after attending a symposium that discussed the relative merits of a new generation of anti-psychotic drugs. "It's striking, and I'm from New York."
